Paying Later Doesn't Mean Paying Less
Buy Now, Pay Later—or BNPL—has become a popular way to spread purchases across multiple payments.
It can be convenient.
But convenience shouldn't be confused with affordability.
A personal loan and BNPL arrangement can both give you access to funds or financing, but they work differently.
What Is Buy Now, Pay Later?
BNPL generally allows a consumer to obtain a product or service immediately and pay the amount over an agreed schedule.
Depending on the provider, there may be:
- Interest
- Service fees
- Late fees
- Installment charges
- Other applicable costs
The exact terms vary.
What Is a Personal Loan?
A personal loan generally provides money that the borrower can use for an approved purpose or according to the product's terms.
The borrower then repays the loan according to an agreed schedule.
The Biggest Difference
BNPL is often connected to a specific purchase.
A personal loan generally provides money that can be used according to the loan agreement.
That difference can affect how you think about borrowing.
Compare the Total Cost
Suppose you're considering a ₱10,000 purchase.
Don't ask only: "Can I afford ₱1,000 per month?"
Ask: "How much will I actually pay by the end?"
A small monthly payment can look affordable while the total financial obligation may be significantly higher.
BSP encourages consumers to understand interest, fees, charges, due dates, and total payment obligations when using credit.
When Is BNPL Appropriate?
BNPL may be useful when:
- The purchase is necessary
- You understand the payment schedule
- You can comfortably make every payment
- The total cost is reasonable
- You aren't already carrying excessive debt
When Should You Be Careful?
Be cautious when you have multiple installment purchases.
For example:
- Phone: ₱1,000/month
- Appliance: ₱1,500/month
- Shoes: ₱500/month
- Online shopping: ₱1,000/month
That's already ₱4,000/month before considering other debts.
Final Thoughts
The payment method isn't as important as the financial decision.
Whether you're using BNPL, a credit card, or a loan, always ask:
Do I need this? Can I afford it? How much will I pay in total? Will this affect my other financial obligations?
If you can't comfortably answer those questions, wait before borrowing.
